The Soup Sisters Cookbook

Soup is on at Zocalo! With great bowls, mugs and recipe books to bundle, it’s a great selection of warming gifts to share with anyone.

With 100 recipes arranged by season, The Soup Sisters Cookbook is a truly unique way to enjoy heartwarming soups throughout the year. The book is a collection of recipes and tips from volunteers and celebrity chefs that aims to continue promoting and supporting Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers, founded by Calgarian Sharon Hapton who had the simple belief in the power of soup as a nurturing and nourishing gesture that makes a tangible difference.

Further, Ms. Hapton believed that two of society’s most prevalent issues, domestic abuse and youth homelessness, would benefit from the care and warmth that comes in a bowl of soup.

Through a variety of soup-making events, a powerful message that says ‘we care’ is now being delivered to over 20 residential shelters across the country through home-made delicious soup made with the finest ingredients. Hundreds of community people are coming together across the country to produce over 8,000 servings of fresh and delicious soups for women, children and youth each month. Since March of 2009, over 100,000 containers of soup have been delivered to shelters from East to West, and there is a growing network of over 7,500 Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers participants across the country.

The Soup Sisters Cookbook showcases scrumptious recipes from the “souper volunteers” of the Soup Sisters and recipes from many of Canada’s top celebrity chefs–including Michael Stadtlander, Bonnie Stern, Lucy Waverman, Massimo Capra, Anna Olson, Michael Bonacini and Elizabeth Baird. The pages are filled with an abundance of ‘souper’ beautiful photographs styled and photographed by Julie Van Rosendaahl, and illustrations by Pierre A. Lamielle. There is advice on making and storing stock; the equipment and techniques you need for successful soup making; and a full list of essential pantry ingredients. It is certain to appeal to soup-lovers everywhere!
