Licorice tasting bulbous stems are eaten raw in salads or as a cooked vegetable. Pile soil half-way around the bulb when it is 5 cm (2") across. Cut off flower head before it blooms to encourage a larger bulb. Use fresh or freeze for winter use.

Sow seed directly in the garden once all danger of frost has passed.
