We stumbled across romance recently: it’s one of our Paris stories that can’t be kept a secret.
On the way to the Louvre museum from the left bank in Paris you cross the Seine river by way of a walking bridge, the Passerelle des Arts. This isn’t just any bridge, however. It’s the bridge where countless lovers lock their love, their secrets, their hopes by locket to the fence. The love padlocks, called ‘cadenas d’amour’, include engraved love letters, initials and abbreviations of all the complicated things that hold them together.
All the betrayals, the tiny hurts and, yes the magic too. The mystery of how everyday is transcended by the unsaid codes that oil the mechanisms of living. Pass the milk, where are my keys and would you like a ride? All this and more, tidily clasped on the crossover chain link as if lonely nights or fights never happened and the freeway was always clear of traffic on the lovers lane.
And just that simply, the lovers’ key is thrown into the river… Secretly enveloping all the mystery that keeps their love beating. With lips padlocked, all hopes are bouyant, yet awash in the knowing that just for this tenuous moment, the secrets of their love are locked. Not to be undone.
