Zocalo’s Valentine’s roses travel a great distance, with much love. Our flowers are as local as we can source them: many come from BC growers year round, and Alberta growers in the summer. This time of year, however, imported flowers are the gems we mostly work with. We have had the great privilege of touring rose farms in Ecuador and found great farms, with lovely people who were happy to find you the best Valentine’s surprises. This year, we are pleased to have chosen some quality Ecuadorian roses from a family-run, premium rose farm that followed us home.
Touring rose farms is not for the faint of heart, literally. At about 14,000 feet above sea level, farms in the mountains north of Quito are positioned at an altitude perfect for rose farming. But short walks up the smallest staircase sends us gasping for air!
In a climate of what seems like eternal spring, farmers are happy to tour us around, proud of their FlorEcuador certifications for social and environmental responsibility. They proudly show off their acres of roses, the quality of the blooms, the care and efficiency of the harvest, and the specialty varieties.
From propagation to growing, tilling to tending and harvest to packing, the whole intricate and careful operation was impressive and definitely a rose-worthy journey. And, yes, we were happy to get back to lower ground.
With our very broken Spanish and their excellent English, we are able to import these door-to- door direct. We have chosen air travel over five-day truck travel to minimize the time your roses are de-hydrated. After unpacking, conditioning, hydrating and cutting, we look forward to transforming those roses into lovely bouquets for you and yours. Con mucho amor!
