Zocalo is hosting the Grand Opening of its brand new indoor courtyard. The weekend of Oct 26-28 promises to be a celebration of colour, plants and frivolity. Folks will enjoy special deals, treats, shopping, and be the first to catch a glimpse as the 12-foot high glass garage doors roll open!
The 1,400 square foot structure—built in a lean-to fashion—nestles northward against the main building. At ten feet high on one side and 18 feet on the other, it’s likely the most compact greenhouse-style building in Edmonton, Alberta. The south-facing structure brings in sunshine all day and the dark green wall functions to maximize passive solar gain. Primarily built by a greenhouse builder from just outside of Calgary, Alberta, construction and renovation took approximately three months to complete.
It’s always been in the dreams and schemes to have a fun, year-round green space where folks can sit with a great cuppa cappuccino and soak it all in! We’ve always wanted to bring that space alive in the winter and the new space, with a polycarbonate roof and glass street frontage, is just our new way to bring new green life onto the retail frontage of Little Italy. An interesting and cheerful way to brighten up a dark season…we’re so excited to be able to push out the elbows, expand our frontage and bring the winter streetscape alive.
The project was kindly funded, in part, with assistance from the City of Edmonton’s Facade Improvement Program.
