Pantone has chosen Radiant Orchid as their colour of the year for 2014. Here at Zocalo we welcome this confident, magical purple into our array of favourite colors. It combines best with turquoise, light yellow, and teals, but can also bring life into neutrals like gray, beige, and taupe without being overwhelming.
“While the 2013 colour of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®.
“An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”
“An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”
A little about Orchids: with more than 20,000 currently accepted species in 880 genera, the purple Phalaenopsis orchid is one of those blooming plants that shows off Pantone’s colour for 2014! Often very colorful and fragrant, orchids are easily identifiable as they have bilateral symmetry, many resupinate flowers (upside down flowers), and fused stamens and carpels. There’s always a few in Zocalo’s plant selection to inspire you.
My favourite Pantone colour of the year from the past six years has to be 2009’s “Mimosa”. Lori and Nicole from our greenhouse both prefer 2010’s “Turquoise”. Which is your favorite? Shoot a comment to @zocaloedm or facebook.com/zocalo.ca and let us know! The debate continues….
